It's my blog so I suppose I can use it to promote any causes and web sites I like. Apologies to those who log on to hear about Harri specifically, there will be more of that shortly, but this immunisation issue is so hot right now, and I was made aware by a comment yesterday of an Australian Group who I think warrant support from like minded (pro vaccination) people. As the title of the post highlights, the group, found on Facebook, are called Stop The Australian Vaccination Network. Their aim, as the title suggests, is to be a thorn in the side of the Australian Vaccination Network (also found on Facebook), an organistion run by an American woman now living in Australia. She peddles all kinds of crazy misinformation on her site, which would almost be funny if not for the fact she is reaching thousands of parents and frightening the crap out of them. Anyway I encourage people to look at both pages if you are on FB.
It's a shame the immunisation debate continues to split the ASD community. But what really pisses me off, is that charlatans and perpetuaters of woo who do not have a child with Autism are making money out of frightening parents. And parents of children with Autism who did immunise them now feel guilty for making that choice. Leading to a surge in mums and dads traipsing through the doors of deluded Homeopaths for toxic cleansing remedies. Don't even get me started on Chelation Therapy!

Hi, just dropping by to say HI!
ReplyDeleteI thought I'd put my 2 bits in too ....... I had my son vaccinated, every single jab, do I feel guilty? Nope, because he had obvious signs way before he had the jabs in question and we can live with Autism, if we hadn't vaccinated him and he had caught one of those awful diseases which could have led to permanent disability or even death.......well that I couldn't live with :)
Hi JO, that's my story too.
ReplyDeleteMy first son regressed in a classic sense. But, after I learned more about autism, I realized that he too showed signs of autism way, way before the regression set in. We just didn't know what we were seeing. I've seen some of those before and after videos that parents have used to "prove" that vaccines caused their child's autism, and I saw the same kinds of signs.
ReplyDeleteI agree that this is a worth-while blog post.
Hi Stephanie, if you are on facebook check the Australian Vaccination Network's page, you'll be horrified by the nonsense they peddle. And of course you would be welcome as a member of the SAVN group too. They are a great bunch.
ReplyDeleteI figured being an American would make that somewhat problematic, but I'll check it out.
ReplyDeleteWhat makes me sad is the idea of the person with autism as an "other" who you can put through potentially uncomfortable procedures, special diets and homeopathic regimes without taking into account their ability to withstand it.
ReplyDeleteAnd the idea that the parent will only truly accept and respect their child when the autism is "removed".
Of course - I also think these curebie people are raging Aspies themselves so someone needs to give them a little bit of support around developing empathy and theory of mind *ducks mudslinging*
which is ironic. xx
Stephanie, you don't have to be Australian to support the group. The more the merrier.
ReplyDeleteI checked it out and liked their page. The work they do is definitely worthy of support.
ReplyDeletePoor parents. My son regressed right after his 15 month immunizations. I mean as in I went into the Dr's office bragging about the 20 words he knew and by the next day I remember thinking "Oh, well, I read sometimes kids learn words and stop saying them because they learned them and move on..." In Economics they talk a LOT about false causation fallacies and I'm into economics so I'm very familiar... and even I was really messed up about vaccinations for a while. I had to become rather emotionally sound again before I was able to think of the situation logically.
ReplyDeleteI believe in regression and Wylie's was dramatic, but he also had some tell tale symtoms beforehand, like Stephanie's child.
I feel bad for parents who can't easily sort out through all the nonsense. I'll check out the Stop the Australian Vaccination Network.
You fuck heads are gonna regret every retarted decision, action and comment you have made to vaccinate yourselves and your innocent children.
ReplyDeleteI wonder why you felt the need to post anonymously? I also wonder why you feel justified in your anger towards the parents commenting here? I suppose it would be silly of me to expect a reasoned response from any one who supports Meryl Dorey.
ReplyDeletethanks Sharon, you have said it so well.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ken.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't vaccinated. I am autistic. Clap your hands if you see where I'm going with this.
ReplyDeleteI had measles as a child and almost died, according to my parents. Keep clapping if you still see the bigger picture.
Maybe measles is the trigger!
Just saying. You can stop clapping now or someone will come and diagnose you. ;)
And a big bugger you to anyone who wants to fix me. *nod*
@ Hammie: Brave, very brave.... **lol**
ReplyDeleteBut seriously, the more time passes and the more I relate to my son. The more I relate to my son the more I see things in myself that make me wonder if I might be somewhere on the spectrum too... Not enough to warrant a diagnosis, but still... Some stuff I do, the way I sometimes react and the things I dislike... It makes me wonder.
MM I am right with you. Did you do the Broad Autism Phenotype test I put up on this blog some months ago? If not put 'Do The BAP into the search bar at the top of the page.
ReplyDeleteCan recommend the Simon Baron-Cohen Empathy/Systemic tests too. I scored highly on both - meaning i can choose the best ikea furniture AND assemble it when I get home. Husband scored low so he has to wait in the car.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I are raging Apies and are in the Trinity World Genome project along with our son. We competed fiercely when doing the psych tests and gloated un-empathetically at our results.
For Anonymous who also thinks it's okay to use & misspell the R-word. I suggest you look up the case of the Internet troll who was recently jailed for offensive posting. He was born many years before the combined vax but is on a disability payment due to his Aspergers.
xx
Lisa Marie have you not seen the raging controversy over at Autism Blogs Directory re. SBC? I'd be fascinated to hear your opinion. Got the link on my blog roll.
