I found this interview in Psychology Today with Julia Bascom to be incredibly insightful and thought provoking, and thus wanted to share. I have to add, the reference to Lovaas though understandable is dismissive. Lovaas pioneered the concept that people with autism could be be taught. It was a turning point in how behaviourists, psychologists and parents (who already knew this) approached the potential for autistic people. I am clear with Harri's ABA therapists I am not aiming for indistinguishuable. That is never going to happen. I am all for embracing and accepting my son and daughter for who they are.

Particular powerful for me in the article is the idea of 'moving' forward towards the person with autism rather than always expecting them to move towards us. This sentiment influences my interactions with my children every day for the betterment of us all.
